YOLO COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION REDISTRICTING PROCESS

YOLO COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION REDISTRICTING PROCESS

Every 10 years, local governments use new census data to redraw their trustee area boundaries, as needed, to reflect how local populations have changed. The Yolo County Board of Education engages local communities in the redistricting process through public outreach efforts and by holding public hearings.

What is redistricting?
Every 10 years, the law requires the Board to analyze new census data to re-balance the population within each trustee area and redraw the area boundaries, if necessary. (Education Code section 1002) This process, called redistricting, is important in ensuring that each trustee represents approximately the same number of constituents. The Board is responsible for drawing the five trustee areas represented by the five trustees. Redistricting is done using U.S. Census data and must be completed by March 1, 2022.

Why does redistricting matter to me?
Redistricting determines which neighborhoods and communities are grouped together into a trustee area for the purpose of electing a trustee representative.

The Board will seek input in selecting the next trustee area map for the Yolo County Board of Education. You have an opportunity to share with the Board how you think trustee area boundaries should be drawn to best represent your community.
